Here is our little sweetheart Myla wearing her Shell Stitch Beanie, the first baby item I ever crocheted! Doesn’t she look simply adorable wearing it? We are so blessed and thankful that we have this playful cutie to make us laugh and smile every single day! This beanie is one of my favourite hats, and I love the beautiful open design and the pretty two-tiered flower with the wooden button! Betsy of “The Dainty Daisy” offers sizing from 0-3 months all the way up to child size (3-10 years). You can access the free pattern HERE!
As you know, when I was pregnant I went on a crochet spree, trying to crochet as many cute items for our baby as I possibly could! I knew we would be doing a newborn photoshoot, so I tried to crochet some special props for it (including this cute stork pouch). While looking up crochet ideas for newborn shoots, I came across this adorable turtle outfit as well as this sweet ladybug outfit. I wanted to make Myla a little outfit too, so we decided to go with a panda bear!
I had already made some owl hats using Sarah’s pattern on “Repeat Crafter Me”- I loved how the seam was hidden and how she had hat patterns for newborns all the way to adults! And so, I followed her newborn pattern to make my panda hat. I used Martha Stewart Crafts Extra Soft Wool Blend in “Bakery Boxy White” to crochet the hat and some black yarn for the braided tails.

Next, I crocheted the ears using black yarn and Ryan cut these oval shapes out of black felt for the eyes.

We sewed the black ovals onto the white hat and then sewed these black buttons onto the black ovals. Ryan then stitched on this sweet little nose consisting of an upside down triangle and an upside down “Y” (see my “Amigurumi Nose Tutorial” HERE for detailed instructions).

Here are some more views of the face…

I think this panda has such an adorable, tender face :)

Then it was time to attach the ears…

We looked for these specific buttons that had a smooth surface on one side and could be attached with little loops on the other side. Typical buttons with holes in the center could work too but we wanted to go for this smooth look as they kind of look like amigurumi safety eyes! We ended up buying these buttons in both black and white from Fabricland as we wanted to see how both would look for our panda hat!

I followed this pattern to make a matching diaper cover! It’s a great pattern as it consists of double crochets and the flaps on the sides can be attached onto the black button at various points, depending on how big your baby is, making it adjustable! We used this diaper cover in Myla’s birth announcement HERE and I hinted how it was part of a special animal set that I had crocheted. Haha, five months later we’re finally revealing that it’s a panda set!

I made a black pom-pom using this tutorial HERE and added it to the diaper cover. I did not secure it with a knot (I just tied the loose ends into a bow) so that the this pom-pom tail was easily removable.

Here is our finished Panda set: an adorable panda earflap hat with a diaper cover!

Here it is again with the diaper cover flipped so that you can see the cute black pom-pom tail!

I was incredibly excited to see Myla wear this little outfit! The hat was actually a little small for her, but the diaper cover fit well. It’s hard knowing how big to make your hats since you never know how big your baby’s head will be! We tried to get a cute sleeping shot but our little girl woke up, haha… And so, we made the most of it by taking some shots while she was awake! Doesn’t she look so adorable with her little tail and hat and her expression? You can see her neck was already quite strong as she could lift her head up at less than a week old! Myla was probably thinking, “Mom and Dad….how dare you disturb my slumber? And why am I dressed like a panda? Where are my clothes?!?”

We tried again another day, but this time with just the hat, making it easier…here you can see the face of the panda better! Doesn’t Myla look so sweet?

We made a bigger panda hat for our friends who were expecting a baby boy, this time using the white eyes! You can see how using the black or white buttons gives the hat a different look :)

I’m so glad we have Myla’s newborn photos to look back upon as time is flying by so quickly. Myla turned 5 months old this week! Here I am with our sweet, precious little strawberry :)

Hope you like this little baby panda set we made! They’d make a great gift for a baby boy or a baby girl, and you could even adapt this set to make different animals, like a koala bear too! Do you have any super bulky yarn from previous projects that you would like to use up? I had a quite a bit left over from making chunky cowls for myself and for my friends this winter. After looking through the Ravelry database, I came across this adorable baby hat pattern by Catherine Wiggins. These super bulky newborn hats work up extremely quickly with only 8 rows and a 10 mm crochet hook. I love the addition of the ribbons to finish off these hats- the ribbon bows give a very sophisticated and polished look! Get the free pattern HERE! You may recognize these yarns since I used the pink yarn to make my “Long Double Crochet Cowl” and the beige yarn to make my “Chunky Double Crochet Cowl”!
And for all you nursing mamas and mamas-to-be, don’t forget to enter my $30 Momzelle giveaway (closing February 28) and access the discount codes for Momzelle nursing clothing and beautiful nursing scarves called CoverBoos in my blog post HERE!
Here is our sweet little Myla wearing the owl hat that I crocheted for her! It’s so special seeing our baby girl wearing all the items I made especially for her when I was pregnant :) This hat was actually a tad snug when we put it on her, and it probably doesn’t fit her anymore…babies grow so quickly! Click HERE to see my blog post about the owl hat and click HERE to get the free pattern!
Here is another baby hat that I really love! This is the “Cluster Hat” by “Alli Crafts” made for newborns. It reminds me of the “Urban Jungle Slouchy Beanie” I made last year with the beautiful texture and staggered rows. Sizing is available for premies, newborns and 6 month olds on her blog for free :) Isn’t this little hat so dainty and pretty?
I’ve been having so much fun whipping up baby hats, and here is one of my favourites! The “Shell Stitch Beanie” by Betsy of The Dainty Daisy is so beautiful, and the pattern is available for free HERE with sizing for 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months, 12-3 years and even 3-10 years! The one I made in this photo is for 0-3 months, but I am so tempted to make more in each size :) The shells are so delicate and pretty and the addition of the double-layered flower makes this hat even more sweet!
Here is another earflap hat I made from Alli’s Crafts. It is essentially the same as the newborn earflap hat pattern (I blogged about them here), but this one is sized for 6 month old babies (pattern found here)! I switched to brown for Row 9 and used the pattern for the “Loopy Six-Petal Flower” found here, also adding a button in the centre. I think pink and brown make a lovely colour combination, don’t you? Check out Alli’s blog as she also has earflap hat patterns for premies, newborns, 3, 6, and 9-12 month old babies and toddlers as well!
Ever since I took up crocheting again, I wanted to make myself a hat. Crocheting amigurumi is fun and all, but once in a while it’s nice being able to wear something you’ve crocheted rather than having it sit on a shelf :) Crochet Pattern Central has a great directory of free hat patterns here. I wanted to find a pattern for a modern, trendy hat, and after looking at countless photos, I found this absolutely beautiful pattern found HERE by Vicki Howell for CARON Yarns. The “Urban Jungle” is a slouchy beanie that is fairly simple to make because it essentially uses one stitch: the puff stitch! Once I learned how to do the puff stitch (Vickie demonstrates this in a video here), I became obsessed with it and made several other items using this beautiful stitch. Puff stitches look gorgeous with their texture and staggered rows. Since I’m used to making amigurumi with only the single crochet, it was nice learning and using something so different :)
Before getting to the puff stitches, however, I needed to make a ribbed band. The ribbed look is created by crocheting in only the front loops. In Vickie’s pattern, she provides instructions on how to make a small/medium hat or a large/extra-large hat (number of stitches required for larger hat in brackets in her pattern). I went with the large/extra-large instructions because I notice that many hats sold in stores are a tad too tight for me. That’s one of the benefits of crocheting your own hat! You get to customize the size PLUS the colour :) I decided to go with this beautiful mustard colour which I thought would contrast with my hair nicely and still be easy to match with given its earthy tone.

And so, once the strip measured about 22” (56 cm), I sewed the short ends together to form a band.

Next I worked single crochets around the edge of the band. Then came the fun part: the puff stitches! I continued with these puff stitches row after row.

Aren’t the puff stitches gorgeous? I love the texture!

About 16 rows of puff stitches and one and a half balls of yarn later, I was ready to close off the top of the hat!

You close off the top of the hat by pinching the edges and single crocheting them together in a star formation. Vickie has a great video demonstrating this here.

Here is my hat all seamed up! I love the look of the scrunched-up, gathered ends :)

By now I was itching to try it on…

So we did a little photoshoot with Ryan as my photographer! In addition to reading craft blogs, I’m an avid reader of numerous fashion blogs, so I took this opportunity to style some outfits to show off my brand new Urban Jungle slouchy beanie :)

I thought this old fence had so much character- I had to pose beside it!

In case you’re wondering, we used the Hipstamatic app for the iPhone to take these pictures. I love the vintage feel it gives to photos :)

I wanted to capture the beautiful fall colours of our surroundings before winter came! I’m so glad we did because we had our very first snowfall this past weekend. Doesn’t my hat complement the fall colours beautifully?

I absolutely love the slouchiness of this hat! It feels very modern with a touch of grunge…

(Blazer: Zara, Sweater: American Eagle, Scarf: American Eagle, Jeans: True Religion, Boots: Aldo, Purse: Marc Jacobs, Hat: Stephanie Jessica Lau & Vickie Howell, heh heh).
My sister Ashley liked my hat so much that she wanted one for herself! We went and chose this purple yarn and I quickly whipped one up just for her :)

And we did another photoshoot! We thought it’d be cute modeling it together as Urban Jungle twinsies :) I love this trail covered with leaves…

Ryan said we also looked like garden gnomes, haha…

(On Ashley, Dress: Forever XXI, Sweater: Forever XXI, Boots: Aldo, Purse: Accessorize. On me, Dress + Belt: Papaya, Sweater: American Eagle, Boots: Aldo, Purse: Marc Jacobs, Bracelet: H&M)
I really think these hats are gorgeous from the back..

Funny story: my brother Corey came along with us on this photoshoot and hopped in some of the pictures…

We took a few pics without our hats and told Corey to hold them for us. We were joking around a bit, saying it’d be funny if Ryan and Corey wore our hats. Corey ended up putting on Ashley’s hat and looked FANTASTIC in it! I told him he looked like he stepped out of a Japanese magazine. He’s totally rocking the Urban Jungle beanie if I do say so myself. Who knew it’d look so great on guys too?

So then of course Corey requested I make one for him, so we went back to the yarn store and picked up some of this beautiful taupe yarn.

Try making these beautiful hats for yourself or perhaps for a loved one! I think they’d make wonderful Christmas gifts, don’t you? And now you know both women AND men can rock these beanies :) Once again, the free pattern can be found HERE. Now you have a very stylish way to keep warm, and you can proudly say that you made this hat yourself if anyone asks!
[Update: I’ve made a Puff Stitch Scarf that you can crochet to match with this Urban Jungle Slouchy Beanie! Get the free pattern HERE!]
